One of the things that attracted my attention early on with photography was the ability to accumulate an exposure over a long time period. This opened up a number of possibilities that simply aren’t available when there is a lot of light around. For one thing, it makes the act of photographing a scene amenable to personal interaction and manipulation. Humans just don’t act, much, within 1/500 of a second. Give me two, four, ten, or forty minutes, though, and that is time I can use to stamp myself into a scene.
